Karen Goldstein

Karen Goldstein was first introduced to Pilates when only 18 years old after developing knee problems while studying ballet in NYC. She was sent to the original Pilates studio run by Romana Kryzanowska, a direct disciple of Joseph Pilates. After returning home to the Bay Area, she continued her ballet training with, as her teacher noticed, "much better alignment". Pilates was not as prominent on the west coast for about 10 years, but later, when Karen continued to have alignment and pain issues from dancing, Pilates had luckily become more available, and so she resumed her Pilates training under the guidance of Jennifer Stacey in San Francisco. She completed her Teacher Training Certification under Ellie Herman and has also studied extensively with Lizz Roman learning rehabilitation techniques based on the principals of Janda. Karen likes to teach Pilates with an emphasis on form and how it applies to functional life movement. She likes to educate her students to have more freedom in movement, strength, and to learn ways to help themselves when their body/pain issues arise so that they can get along with more ease in their everyday lives.

Stephanie Herman

Stephanie Herman, a former Prima Ballerina for George Balanchine’s dance companies in Zurich and Geneva, Stephanie spent her life in ballet’s most rarified circles, training from the age of 12, graduating from School of American Ballet when she was 19 and performing with the greatest dancers and choreographers of the twentieth century including Mikhail Baryshnikov, Rudolph Nureyev, George Balanchine Martha Graham, and Alvin Ailey. Stephanie's fitness method was born from efforts to heal herself. After a debilitating back and knee injury which left her unable to sit or walk for a year, and the failure of doctors to heal her, Stephanie drew upon her training and educated herself about body mechanics and kinetics. Using a program she designed, Stephanie surprised her doctors with a quick and complete recovery that left her stronger than before. During that time, Ms. Herman delved deeply into the philosophy and science of physical expression, psychology and rehabilitation, and working directly with Carola Trier the first disciple of Joseph Pilates, and Julio Horvath himself, the creator of the Gyrotonic Expansion System. Certified by the American College of Sports Medicine (ASCM), Pilates. Ms. Herman is fully versed in the physiology of human musculature. This therapeutic element is present in every workout she creates. After founding and directing her DanceAerobics studio in New York for many years, Ms. Herman founded and operates "Stephanie Herman's Fitness and Pilates" the San Francisco Bay Area. Stephanie Herman is also the award winning producer and host of the infamous, "The Stephanie Herman Show" a tv show that reaches 1 million homes in the Bay area. Ms. Herman has also been featured on other talk shows and in national and international publications for her unique and effective dance fitness programs.
